When Alfie was a toddler, his parents Kieron and Louise noticed he wasn’t developing in quite the same way as other children his age. They went back and forth to doctors, but it took over a year before they finally received the life-changing news that Alfie had Duchenne muscular dystrophy – a rare condition that causes muscles to weaken and waste over time.

“We were given the diagnosis over the phone, and told we’d be referred for ongoing appointments. But then we were kind of just left to deal with the news on our own.

“That phone call changed everything. We were left with more questions than answers, so we started searching for help – and that’s when we found Muscular Dystrophy UK (MDUK).

“They sent us all the information we needed about Alfie’s condition, and it was such a relief to know there was somebody there straight away to help answer our questions or signpost us to the services we needed.

“Whenever we’ve had questions about Alfie’s care, whether it’s around housing adaptations, education, equipment, or about his condition, there was always someone at the end of the phone.

“MDUK offers a broad spectrum of support and, while you’re getting that support on a professional level, it also feels like you’re talking to a friend. It makes such a difference knowing the person you’re talking to knows exactly what you’re going through.

“Alfie just loves life and continues to amaze us. He gets up with a smile on his face every day and just enjoys everything he does.

“He knows he’s different, and that’s sometimes frustrating for him, but he’s just so positive and makes the best out of everything.
