World Horse Welfare Field Officer, Rachel, discovered two underweight Thoroughbred mares close to a busy road. With clear signs of neglect Rachel could see that their situation was even more urgent than it first appeared.

It was clear the horses had been left without care for some time. Both were covered in lice and had overgrown hooves, and Rachel suspected at least one of them was pregnant.

They were swiftly taken to our Penny Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Lancashire and, thanks to the support of people who can’t bear to think of an animal suffering, we were able to help them.

The mares were given urgent medical help as well as round-the-clock care by our dedicated grooms. They were named Rachel and Phoebe after characters in the hit TV series Friends, as our Field Officer Rachel couldn’t believe how friendly the pair were, “Thoroughbreds can be quite sensitive, but these two mares were so friendly from the first time I met them. We all just fell in love!”.

Within weeks, both gave birth to healthy foals. Phoebe’s little filly foal was named Estelle and Rachel’s handsome colt was named Gunther.

Today, their future is bright. As part of the World Horse Welfare family they are promised a lifetime of care and security.
